British-based AFL Architects have designed a sports city complex for Tanzania. More than just a stadium, it features state-of-the-art facilities to host regional and international events and is expected to boost the sports betting industry.
Online sports betting has become a booming industry in Tanzania, much the same as the rest of the gambling hotspots in Africa.
Driven primarily by a love of sports and the drive to play the odds in favour of their favourite teams, Tanzanians have embraced the digital revolution.
With the proliferation of mobile devices, increased internet penetration and the rise of digital payment systems, they have largely shifted to the online sphere of sports betting.
The Manchester and London-based British design firm AFL Architects has announced a comprehensive master plan for the building of a major sports city complex in Fumba, in collaboration with Zanzibar’s Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports.
The design team at AFL are known for creating spaces that combine modern thinking with local context. Their experience in designing stadiums has led to a collaboration with Globespan Infrastructure, an Investment company from Boston.
Announcements of this magnitude are rare in Tanzania, with the sizeable investment aiming to create a space that meets the needs of the local community, whilst also attracting high-profile international sports events, concerts, and conferences.
As a result, Zanzibar will gain a slice of modern infrastructure capable of ensuring year-round economic and social benefits.
The centrepiece of the complex will be the StadiArena Stadium, a modern, multi-purpose facility designed for flexible use and sustainability, addressing the growing demand for a world-class footballing venue and other large-scale public events.
One of the stadium’s standout attributes will be the “StadiDoor” feature, allowing one of the stands to be easily converted into a fully enclosed indoor arena, ensuring the venue is used to its full potential all year round, regardless of the weather.
The sports city complex is not merely a stadium. The project will also include training pitches, a four-star hotel, a modern hospital and a passenger port to better facilitate connectivity to the rest of the archipelago and the mainland. This is all specifically designed and integrated to meet the diverse needs of guests from around the world.
As Tanzania’s sports city becomes an expected hub for local and international sports events, the development of modern facilities will result in more sporting spectacles to wager on. The concurrent swelling of betting pools due to the influx of international punters would be expected to boost odds and positively affect payouts.
The development of the sports city complex would also have an economic impact on the potential earnings of locals employed there, leading to a greater disposable income that could be used for increased spending on leisure activities such as sports betting.
